Zenith was founded in Le Lockle , the heart of the Swiss watch making region, by Georges Favre-Jacot in 1865. The founder of the company was only 22 at that time.
In the very beginning this was a small watch manufacture that specialized on high quality and inexpensive watches. The business turned out to be successful and the company grew very rapidly. In 1911 the manufacture got its present name - Zenith SA.
In the beginning of the World War I Zenith SA started manufacture of wrist watches. This was a great success and the name of the brand got in the top of companies that win prizes at the famous Swiss contests of watch manufacturers. On the whole the company won more than 1500 prizes and became one of the best Swiss manufacturers. Watches that were manufactured in the first half of the 20th century are still very popular with watch collectors and connoisseurs.
The greatest success was achieved in 1969 when the company presented the famous 3019PHx caliber that became greatly popular under the name of El Premiero. In fact there were two variants of the Caliber: El Primero 3019 PHC with date indicator that consisted of 280 details and Espada 3019 with calendar and moon phase indication. The latter consisted of 354 details. The main peculiarity of both calibers was (and it is) a very high tact.
In 1999 Zenith was bought by The LVMH Group (Lois Vuitton Moet Hennessy).
In 2003 the company starts a new series of women's watches that soon comprises a third of the whole production.
In 2004 Zenith gets Grand Prix for the best watches of the year
In 2005 the company issued the first jewelry watch. The model was adorned with 230 diamonds. At the same time the company issues one more model of men's watches - DEFY.
